Intro Videos – Getting started guide

We are excited to present for your viewing pleasure, a series of short videos covering setup and usage of the seoslide plugin compiled into an seoslides presentation. You can view the whole presentation here: Getting started with seoslides

Or, you can skip to specific parts:

Installing the seoslides plugin

The seoslides plugin installs and activates just like any other WordPress plugin.

Option #1 – From the Plugin repository in WordPress

Select “Add New” from the “Plugins” option in your WordPress administration panel.

Using the form, search “seoslides” and click “Activate.”

You will notice the “Presentations” option appear in your WordPress administration panel.

Option #2 – Manually upload to WordPress

Visit http://wordpress.org/plugins/seoslides and download the plugin.

Select “Add New” from the “Plugins” option in your WordPress administration panel.

Click the “Upload” menu option.

Click “Choose File” and select the plugin.

Click “Install Now.”

After the plugin uploads, click “Activate.”

You will notice the “Presentations” option appear in your WordPress administration panel.

Note: If your computer is automatically unzipping the file, you will want to, through your FTP software, connect to your web server, browse to wp-content/plugins and upload the seoslides folder to your plugins folder. If you are using Safari and want it to stop automatically unzipping the download, go to Safari > preferences > General > and uncheck “Open safe files after downloading”

If you need additional information about installing plugins, in-depth information can be found on the WordPress codex at http://codex.wordpress.org/Managing_Plugins.

Complimentary Plugins

The seoslides plugin works with the excellent photon component of JetPack to optimize images sizes for better performance on small screens. All you have to do is install JetPack and they will start working. No settings required!

Creating a new presentation

Select “Add New” from the “Presentations” option in your WordPress administration panel.

Add a Presentation Title

Edit presentation defaults by selecting the “Edit” option next to the first slide, labeled “Slide Master”.

Edit or remove the default slide automatically added under the slide master.

Add more slides, by clicking the “Add Slide” button below the list of existing slides.

Uploading images and video

To insert media, edit a slide then right-click anywhere on the slide canvas and choose insert image. This will open the Media Gallery box.

In the Media Gallery box, there are a few radio options that let you select how to insert the image. You can link to the image itself, to the attachment page, to a custom URL, or to none. If you change this to anything other than the image itself (usually the default), then it will not embed correctly.

Occasionally a plugin will change the default. If you are having trouble with images, take a look in the Media Gallery box. There is a “Link URL” field with three buttons: None, File URL, Attachment URL. Click the File URL button to insert the right path.

Finding presentation freebies

We are accumulating an incredible set of presentation freebies, resources and tools for our registered users. The link will magically appear after you register (yes, even with a free license!).

If you don’t see the page after logging in, please refresh your browser.

Slide and background image dimensions

Upgrading the seoslides plugin

To upgrade your seoslides plugin, visit http://seoslides.com/upgrade.

Importing an Existing Presentation

The seoslides import feature currently only supports PDF. Most presentation software will easily let you export your presentation to PDF.

Instructions for exporting a PDF from Keynote

Instructions for exporting a PDF from Powerpoint

Once you have your presentation in PDF format, select “Import Slides” from the “Presentations” option in your WordPress administration panel.

To upload your PDF, “Choose File” from your computer and click the “Upload for Conversion” button.

It will appear that nothing is happening, but the magic is happening behind the scenes, and you’ll be sent an email when ready to go.

After the email arrives, you can click on “Check for completed conversions” to process. If it is not there right away, don’t be alarmed. Give it a minute and try again.

To process your imported presentation, click the “Process Imports” button.

A “Draft” presentation will be created in the “Presentations” section of your site for each new import.

Note: Since we are converting a PDF version of your presentation into images, your notes, slide animations, transitions, and other embedded media will not work on your site. If you’d like to add a video to a slide, you may do so in the slide editor.

SEO optimizing a new presentation

The URL of each slide in your presentation contains the name of the presentation and the title of the slide. (i.e. http://yourwebsite.com/slides/presentation-title/slide-title/).

Since every slide becomes a page on your site, every slide provides an opportunity to provide a custom description, keywords and notes.

Slide notes, in addition to the content you add to your slide, then become your SEO optimizable page content.

Last, and certainly not least, when you embed your presentation in a post on your WordPress site, you are adding yet another opportunity for SEO optimization.

Editing an Existing Presentation

Select “All presentations” from the “Presentations” option in your WordPress administration panel.

Within the presentation you would like to edit, select the “Edit” option.

Reorder slides by selecting anywhere in the open space in each slide menu and dragging to the desired location.

To view slides you have previously trashed, select the “Show Trashed Slides” button at the bottom of your slide list.

Embedding a Presentation

Option #1 – When presentation is first published

When you “Publish” your presentation, you will be provided a link to “Use presentatation in a new post.” This option will embed your presentation directly into a new blog post.

Option #2 – Using the WordPress Shortcode

To embed an existing presentation into a page or post in any WordPress site, including yours, visit the live presentation.

From the menu, select “WordPress Shortcode” option, copy the code provided, and paste in the page or post desired.

NOTE: The embed code is *slide specific* – meaning it will embed from the slide you are currently viewing. If you’d like to embed a presentation from the beginning, make sure you copy the code from the first slide.

Option #3 – Using the presentation embed code

To embed an existing presentation elsewhere on the internet, visit the live presentation.

From the menu, select “Embed Script” option, copy the code provided, and paste where desired.

NOTE: The embed code is *slide specific* – meaning it will embed from the slide you are currently viewing. If you’d like to embed a presentation from the beginning, make sure you copy the code from the first slide.

Advanced Embedding – Setting embed dimensions

Yes, you can add height and width parameters to the shortcode directly.

If you’re using the script embed rather than the shortcode, you can add data-width and data-height attributes to the script tag to customize its presentation.

If no parameters are set, then the embed defaults to 100% for width, and height auto-adjusts to fit the 16:9 built-in ratio.

Sharing your presentation to seoslid.es

After creating a presentation, you’ll have the following option in your Publish widget: “seoslid.es: Not Shared.”

Simply select “Share on seoslid.es now” to post to seoslid.es. We’ll have to approve your presentation, which we’ll do expediently.

How to beta

If you are reading this, seoslides is in beta, meaning that you may experience bugs, speed/performance issues, and/or crashes.

This is, in fact, the first time that seoslides is available outside of our testing environment.

You, as a beta tester, are agreeing to test things out for us, communicate with us frequently about your experiences, and have an open mind about our first step together.

Minimum supported technology

WordPress 3.6+
PHP 5.2.17+

Chrome 23
Firefox 15
Internet Explorer 10
Opera 11
Safari 5

Video backgrounds in Internet Explorer are currently not supported. We are working diligently to improve compatibility, but for right now presentations with video backgrounds are not working in any version of Internet Explorer.

Known conflicts

The seoslides plugin is now backwards compatible to PHP 5.2.17+. However, we strongly encourage you upgrade to PHP 5.3 or (5.4 if that is an option). Many hosts default to older versions of PHP, but most will upgrade you on request.

W3 Total Cache has an option to automatically minify and concatenate javascript. However, it forces all scripts into the header. Many scripts including the one used by seoslides are designed to be loaded in the footer. Switching to manual minify or disabling minify fixes the conflict. We are working with W3 Total Cache to make the script load correctly even in auto mode.

Known issues

23 April 2014: We are aware that playing a video permanently removes the control overlays and are working on an encompassing video solution now.

Accessing support

Support, including the ability to report bugs and conflicts, is offered directly inside your site to seoslides plugin users who have registered for a free license key. By registering, you will also receive three (3) free PDF presentation imports directly into your WordPress site. Directions for importing a new presentation can be found here.

Pro users will have access to priority support, in addition to a number of additional benefits.

Reverting to the free version

When you revert to the free version from the pro license, you will lose access to your professional-only options. Nothing on the front-end, functionality, layout or otherwise will change. Your site will not break.

Uninstalling the seoslides plugin

The seoslides plugin deactivates and uninstalls just like any other WordPress plugin.

Select “Installed Plugins” from the “Plugins” option in your WordPress administration panel.

Locate the “seoslides” plugin and click “Deactivate.”

After you deactivate the plugin, it can be removed by clicking “Delete.”
